Synopsis

Melancholy Scientist is a collection of poems about writing ­poetry, and about making music and art and dance and ­trouble. Edwin Dobb referred to the scientific method as a “modest ­device.” Poetry is another modest device for interpreting the world as we find it. Amsterdam, Havana, Ireland and Saskatchewan are among the local and distant places these poems wander. The work ­approaches the poem from different directions, including synesthetic translations, elegies, self-portraits, blues, longer poems and even a half-sonnet. The poems stand, like Issa’s scarecrow, leaning into the wind, heart open, where “the music of the breath is enough to dance to.” NICHOLAS POWER is a founding ­member of the Meet the Presses ­collective, and has performed with the sound poetry ensemble Alexander’s Dark Band. He works as a ­psychotherapist in private practice. He has been published by Underwhich ­Editions (wells), The Writing Space (a modest device) and Battered Press (No Poems).
