Detective Moran is at a loss to explain the mysterious disappearance of a local student when he investigates the recovery of an antique statue. The boy’s friends all have a story—one of seeing an unexplained “shadow” and the only thing they can agree on is that it appears to float and... they are afraid of it. Loki has been a figure in many tales, whether stemming from Norse folklore or someone’s imagination. He has been portrayed as evil and as mischievous, depending on which tale you read. When shown as evil, he is described as deliberate and malevolent in his actions. As the mischief-maker, he is more of a blunderer. Loki’s curiosity leads to calamity after calamity. In this story, the author choses to portray Loki as the mischievous character; hence, the title. However, she leaves it for the reader to decide for themselves, since there are parts of the story where Loki could be seen as wicked. This also leaves you, the reader, to choose for yourself as to whether Loki even exists in the story or... if he is only a diversion.
