In the mid-1980s, many teachers with whom I worked became puzzled and concerned about the changes they were noticing in children’s war play in the classroom. They found it harder to limit and redirect play with violent themes, especially among boys, than they had in the past. Children continued to engage in the play when the adults turned their attention elsewhere, and some boys seemed almost obsessed with the play. Teachers also found it harder to get girls and boys to play together than they had before (Levin & Carlsson-Paige 2006; Linn 2004).
