Brave Men Shouldered Their Muskets is unique in that it celebrates not the solitary Civil War soldier, but a community of men and boys that went off to fight. Some wanted to abolish slavery. Some wanted to preserve the union. Some wanted to punish the rebellion and experience war’s glory. But the soldiers were all connected to each other and to their people at home. Their people at home were not a homogenous group, though. In 1861 Madison Township, Iowa, and the little town of Polk City were immigrant towns. Everyone had come from somewhere else, most within the previous decade. They all brought their culture and upbringing with them. So there were not only patriots, but also Copperheads at home, all trying to navigate the passionate division literally tearing the country apart. That experience is also related through the stories of those who lived it. The book is also unique in its access to primary sources related to the war. American Patriotism, a book by Leonard Brown honoring Polk County Iowa’s fallen soldiers, was published a short five years after the close of the war. The author of Brave Men Shouldered Their Muskets, local historian Roxana Currie, had access to Brown’s record as well as family histories and letters, along with secondary sources such as Benjamin F. Gue’s History of Iowa, Vol. II, The Civil War, Dixon’s Centennial History of Polk County, Iowa, and the Union Historical Company’s The History of Polk County, Iowa, all published before 1900. The history buff and the student of ordinary people both will find the book interesting and informative. After all, what is history but the stories of the people who lived it?
