The present work is the response to a demand (not at all anticipated) for a French companion to the authors German-E nglish Dictionary for Chemists. It follows the plan of the earlier book, which seems to have met with general favor. Prof. F. W. Tanner of the University of Illinois has read the galley proof and added a nimiber of biological terms, and Prof. Frank Vogel of theM afisachusetts Institute ofT echnology has read the page proofs and the manuscript of the Introduction and has also contributed the general statement prefacing the Conjugation ofF rench Verbs. The author is likewise under obligation toP rof. C. W. Foulk, Mr. E. J. Crane and Dr. Maurice L. Dolt, and to numerous other friends who have given opinions or answered queries. Reference works chiefly consulted: Generaly Clifton-G rimaux-M cL aughlin, French-E nglish Dictionary; theL arousse dictionaries, especially the latest, Larousse pour tous. TechniccH fR pertoire technologique des noms dindustries et de professions (by French Government officials) ;W illcox, French-E nglish Military Technical Dictionary; De Mric, Dictionnaire des termes de mdecine. The material has been rather scattered, consequently a large proportion has been obtained by the reading of books, catalogs and journals. A really good dictionary is a growth. No one can realize as well as the author how incomplete the vocabulary of this one still is. The very helpful correspondence regarding errors and omissions in the German-E nglish dictionary leads to the hope that readers will go to the same trouble in this case. AUSTIN M.
