Visit a Christian congregation of any denomination during a service of worship and you are likely to experience an oral reading of one or more texts. Unfortunately, this reading is often one of the least engaging parts of a service—the text is often read in a monotone, names and places are stumbled over, and meanings and nuances are either ignored or misunderstood by the reader—all of which reinforces an unspoken belief that the Bible is dull and that its messages are irrelevant to our current lives and the world we inhabit. Nothing could be further from the truth!
