For journalism to survive and flourish, it needs journalists who understand its importance to society, believe in and are committed to its core values, and can put those values into action. This goal is at the heart of Living Journalism, a highly readable, practical book where readers will learn the core values and principles needed to produce work that informs and enlightens an increasingly mobile and participatory audience. The advice and stories of professionals throughout the book allow veteran reporters to serve as mentors to today s journalists. Living Journalism provides exercises, assignments and checklists so readers can immediately go out into their communities to practice the skills and demonstrate the values they ve learned. Living Journalism emphasizes and exemplifies the skills that new journalists need to develop (for example, reporting accurately, asking good questions, paying attention to details, preparing for the unexpected and having a passion for the profession). The book reflects the author s more than 30 years of reporting and teaching experience and is based on research and dozens of interviews with other journalists.
A review in the June 2012 issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Education (volume 67, number 2, pages 184-85) acclaims this book, which "celebrates the best of journalism and offers aspiring journalists a guide for following the most vaunted traditions in the field." The reviewer notes that the book has "a fresh, contemporary feel, with numerous references to new technologies of newsgathering, such as social media, blogs, online reporting tools, and even the use of email by reporters." She praises the author, who has done "an impressive job of following up on stories by finding the journalists involved in the original incidents and updating the narratives with their reflections on what had happened." The reviewer concludes by stating that "young journalists of all stripes who are serious about making a difference and exemplifying the best professional standards will find a great deal of inspiration from Martin's ideas, a great deal of encouragement from his hopeful tone." --From a review in the June 2012 issue of Journalism & Mass Communication Editor
