Hardcover. Etat : Fine condition. First edition. Small Folio. 211 (4)pp., plus heavy-boards portfolio with poster. Original tan paper-covered boards with illustrated color plate laid to cover, white spines with gray lettering; in heavy, additional portfolio in same manner with color photo laid to cover; housed in yellow plastic slipcase with clear lettering. Gray endpapers. Illustrated half-title and color frontispiece. Beautifully illustrated in color photography, several foldouts. The additional portfolio contains a folded poster featuring a color photograph of an Indonesian girl with a photographic 'story board' retracing the encounter with this Indonesian girl by Alec Soth. "I have much pleasure in commending this little work on the "Southern Stars" to the general public, and particularly to the readers in the Southern Hemisphere. The whole of my spare time being absorbed in astronomical work of a technical character, I have not had an opportunity for going into a detailed examination of the contents, but I believe we may safely trust the accuracy of the enterprising author. The work is pleasantly photographed, and is calculated to supply a popular need, and more particularly in New Zealand. I trust its publication may create in this hemisphere a taste for Uranography, and thus lead to a wider knowledge of the principle constellations and their lucidae." (Tebutt). From the publisher: "In the Spring of 2009, John Gossage and Alec Soth traveled together to New Zealand to work on a joint photography project. For both, it was a trip of departures. Gossage has been creating photographic literature in black-and-white for over 40 years, and this trip yielded one of the first bodies of work he had ever produced in color. Soth's work with the 8x10 view camera has inspired an entire generation of his contemporaries, and leaving it behind was key to approaching the world from a fresh visual perspective. The results represent a major shift of vision for these two vastly important American photographers. This publication represents the culmination of that trip. Both the concept and the content of the book have been driven by the uniqueness of the collaboration and the primacy of the photobook to the artistic practice of both Soth and Gossage. Essentially two books in one, The Auckland Project showcases a playful attention to materials and presentation that marks all Radius Books projects. Unlike 2007's Obvious & Ordinary in which Martin Parr (in his signature color) and John Gossage (using black-and-white) published the results of a road-trip across the American South, this volume presents the two photographers' work separately, creatively combined through the device of the book and its housing."
