Présentation de l'éditeur

"Even though he was a physician, Dr. Jason Powers knew little about addiction until he became a patient in rehab himself. While he had many ideas about addiction, few were accurate. His initial judgment was that he ended up in addiction treatment because he was broken; a moral failure. In rehab, he was informed that his addiction was actually a disease. Initially, he was skeptical classifying addiction as a disease conflicted with his preconceived notions. In his search for understanding, Dr. Powers dove into gathering all available information about addiction and making sense of it. This book is the fruit of that labor; it is the result of a doctor's journey to answer the question, 'What exactly is addiction?' This is an inclusive volume that dispels misconceptions and covers a wide range of topics from: what addiction is, its dynamics, and neurochemistry, to drugs of abuse, treatment approaches, medications, and interventions, to relapse prevention, and process addictions, such as gambling, food, and sex. It provides an in-depth understanding of addiction as a progressive and chronic disease with striking similarities to many other illnesses such as heart disease and type 2 diabetes. Dr. Powers describes active addiction, treatment, and recovery in detail, from the scientific state-of-the art to the level of the individuals and families affected. His compelling analysis uses information derived from diverse sources to engage in a practical discussion of what works and what does not work. Enormous strides are occurring in how addiction is understood and treated. Medications that at one time had nothing to do with addiction are proving to have promising treatment applications. Behavioral disorders previously believed to be mere compulsions have been found to exhibit brain chemistry changes and other features remarkably similar to drug addiction. Professionals working closely with addicts have known for decades that addiction is a disease process, not a moral failing or character flaw. However, what has been observed in the addiction treatment community for many years has only recently been substantiated by science. Advancements in scientific imaging, brain research, and other medical breakthroughs have provided objective proof that, like many other chronic conditions, addiction is in fact a disease. The outdated and prejudicial view that addicts are people of weak character who chose to indulge themselves too much continues to be perpetuated. When the Servant Becomes the Master is an important step in the direction of correcting such misperceptions. "
