Synopsis

Japan was influence greatly by China in its early development including a structure of government, social skills, construction, art, philosophy, communication, trade and garden design. Of particular interest to note thru our virtual historical tour of Japan’s history discussed in this book, are the five major trade routes. The most famous of these routes was the Tokaido, an Eastern Sea Route. As you will see thru our “pilgrimage” of time, the Tokaido was one element that remained constant throughout history. It served as a means for trade, a route for religious pilgrimage to the Ise Grand Shrine, a major road for military deployment and a channel for government communication. The people of Japan went thru hundreds of years in turmoil and bloody revolutions only to become united finally by the Tokugawa Shogunate. During this period a quiet lifestyle ensued and peace settled across the land but at the price of being closed to the world. It was during this time, referred to as the Edo Period that Japan developed its culture into an art form and became the people they are today. As the Edo period ended, the people emerged into a new era brought about by the Meiji Restoration that modernized Japan and began its industrial development. In addition, some of the social roughness that had developed during the Edo period was refined but the core ingredients of Japanese culture remained in tact. The respect, honesty, confidence and cultural unity we all recognize and associate with the Japanese have a long history of development. Like Mt. Fuji which began in a fiery burst to finally settle into a sleeping giant, the culture of Japan followed a similar path. When I have viewed Mr. Fuji from my hotel room, the Tokaido Shinkansen, car or just standing near its base I feel a connection back in time to Japan. I realize that their country truly weathered an explosive cultural revolution.
