JOPHEN STEIN: ABSTRACTO takes an in-depth look at the surreal world of artist and illustrator Jophen Stein. The works contained in Abstracto bear hints of ironic adulation of pulp novels and political propaganda as Stein questions how meaning and metaphor are constructed. Within his stunning Theatre of the Absurd, shanghaied sailors, courageous child super heroes, emperors, Freemasons and beyond rub shoulders, searching pointlessly for direction in their chaotic and incoherent existence. In reaction to the seemingly nonsensical layers of narrative found in our modern life, Stein's figures are often lost in communication breakdown and other themes that provoke deep sympathy in viewers. Jophen Stein received his BFA from Laguna College of Art and Design in 2003, and he attended the Art Center of Pasadena from 1996 to 1997. Includes a text by A.P. Owens. Edition is limited to 1000 copies.
