“Where is our house?” These four simple words spoken by Charlie would commence years of struggle, heartbreak and learning. Diagnosed with Alzheimer’s Disease, a once brilliant college professor struggled to conceptualize a world which grew increasingly more complicated and confusing. NOTHING LEFT TO BURN graphically and vividly describes Charlie’s journey into the quadmire of Alzheimer’s while his wife attempts to transition to her new role of caregiver. While disease continued to pummel and permeate Charlie’s brain, shredding connections and shattering the known world, his psychologist wife began a search into ways to compensate for Charlie’s decline while still maintaining a meaningful relationship with a man she no longer knew. This is a true story which will have an inevitable ending. In the meantime, the author hopes her story might help others toward an uncerstanding of the day-to-day struggles so that families and caregivers may move forward, making informed decisions which result in feelings of well-being for patient and caregiver alike.
