Synopsis

Calvin Theological Seminary and Calvin University began in 1876 as de Theologische School, a "trade school" for Christian Reformed pastors. The school had seven students and one professor, all Dutch American; a theological program; and a liberal arts preparatory program. Calvin came to embrace a vision of integrating faith into all areas of learning and life. Today the two schools have some four thousand students and dozens of academic and professional programs. Their faculty, staff, and students come from around the world. Yet they remain animated by Reformed Christianity. The Right Kind of Worldliness sets their stories in an American and global context and explores a dynamic tension between engaging the world and wariness about it that has shaped them.
