This single-minded little book is about one thing and one thing only: teaching you easy, bulletproof methods for brewing a spectacularly good cup of coffee even when you are standing half-awake in your own kitchen with toothpicks holding your eyelids open.
Zagat has named Portland, Oregon’s Ristretto Roasters one of the 10 coolest independent coffee houses in the country. Now founder and chief roaster Din Johnson demonstrates that you needn’t be a barista to make great coffee at home. Whether you prefer a chewy, earthy cup or a bright, clean one, there is a dead-simple method here that will work for you.

Din Johnson grew up in Portland, Oregon. A former skate punk, Johnson worked as a bouncer, barkeep and painting contractor up and down the West Coast before returning to Portland to found Ristretto Roasters in 2005 with the help of his wife, Nancy Rommelmann. Since then, Ristretto has grown from boutique cafe with an on-site vintage roaster into a thriving business with an independent roastery and coffee lab, and three architecturally distinctive and popular cafes in urban Portland.
Ristretto’s coffees have been recommended to readers of Travel + Leisure, Sunset Magazine and Bon Appetit, and in 2011, Zagat named Ristretto one of “The 10 Coolest Coffee Shops Across the US.”
“My biggest thing is making good coffee approachable,” Johnson told the Oregon Business Journal in 2012. This book, written in close collaboration with Ristretto’s staff of baristas, many of whom have been with the company since it opened, is a direct outgrowth of that philosophy.
