In the first, MY LIFE, Alma Lafuente Salvadoir, educator and author, presents with her characteristic combination of sensibility and humor, moments of her childhood and youth in Cuba and her life as an educator in the United States. The second, POEMS, offer a sample of her poetry. The third, MY MOTHER’S GARDEN, was written by Alma Flor Ada at her mother’s request, to remember some of the many individuals whose lives were enriched by Alma Lafuente’s caring generosity. In sum, an introduction to an extraordinary woman, her time, and some of those who shared her life.

Alma Lafuente Salvador was born in Cuba, daughter of two remarkable educators Dolores Salvador and Medardo Lafuente. An enthusiastic teacher she searched for methods to make education successful and engaging. As coordinator of a FLES [Foreign Language in the Elementary School] program in Georgia she created an innovative program using close circuit TV to engage multiple classrooms in the learning of Spanish through skits created by her and performed by students. Her social consciousness and her concern for recent immigrants led her to teach English as a Second Language to Adults and offer guidance and support to her students. This example became an inspiration for her daughter Alma Flor Ada to devote her life to education with a social justice orientation. It has equality been an inspiration for her other daughters and many of those who had the privilege of meeting her. Alma Lafuente’s writing includes two inspirational books, DEL AYER AL MAÑANA and MANANTIAL DE SENTIMIENTOS, as well as numerous plays for children. Alma Lafuente Salvador nació en Cuba, hija de dos extraordinarios educadores, Dolores Salvador y Medardo Lafuente. Educadora entusiasta creó métodos para enseñar con alegría y eficacia. Como coordinadora, en el estado de Georgia, de un programa FLES [Foreign Language in the Elementary School o enseñanza de idiomas en la escuela primaria] creó un programa innovador que utilizaba la televisión de circuito cerrado para que múltiples clases participaran en el aprendizaje del español, por medio de guiones escritos por ella y actuados por alumnos.
