Gera Jacobs is a professor of early childhood education at the University of South Dakota. She served as president of NAEYC from 2012 to 2014.Kathy Crowley is a kindergarten teacher and has taught preschool through the primary grades. She also served as vice president of the South Dakota AEYC.

The standards movement has generated a great deal of discussion, both positive and negative, among educators, legislators, families, and other stakeholders. Some have questioned whether national education standards, including the Common Core State Standards (CCSS), are too rigorous, expecting more of students than is warranted. Some express concern that the standards do not give attention to important domains such as social and emotional development. Others have praised the focus on higher-order thinking, problem solving, and communicating, as well as the higher expectations they believe will serve students well in the future. These higher expectations have resulted in added stress though for many teachers, students, and parents.
