Synopsis

The Medicus Codex, book one in Cy Stein's new historical fiction series, Vox Populi, brings Roma to life through the voice of the people. Aaron bar Akiva embarks on a life-changing journey from Galilee to Rome after the death of his abba, his father, to re-connect with his only sibling, Rachel, who settled there years earlier. The voyage instantly triggers the harsh realities of survival in the City, fraught with peril and eerily reminiscent of Western civilization today. With the intent to further his physician's skills from that of army medic to Roman doctor, Aaron changes his name to the more-acceptable Gaius Romulus Saccius, and struggles for relevance as a Judean transplant within the prejudiced hierarchy of Roman nobility. The fateful saga follows a tumultuous rise and fall in fortune, social status, and family life, reaching a crescendo amid the House of Severus, who reigned in the 3rd century CE. Through deeply developed fictional characters, the realities of life in the Empire reveal an unwieldy desire for power, fortune, and the relentless pursuit of wanton sexuality.
