Synopsis

The author of this dissertation developed an instrument to measure students’ perceptions of personal safety and personal exposure to violence. These self-perceptions of safety were then compared with official campus crime statistics. The author found that the safer students felt on campus, the more likely they were to be the victim of a violent crime. This is a reprint of Michael J. Hollis’ (2010) dissertation for his Ph.D. in Education at Texas State University. It is being printed due to a demand for the survey instrument contained within and is intended for a very limited academic audience.
