Synopsis

The study before you is an effort to work through the major prophets in one quarter or one trimester. There has been little or nothing in print that covers these five books in one workbook. There is a place for a detailed study of each of these works as one finds in a commentary or workbook studying an individual prophet. On the other hand, there is also a place for a study that gives a summary or bird’s eye view. This kind of summary is often used by Biblical writers to make their point without considering all the details. In the first sermon of Moses (Deuteronomy 1-4), he gives the history of Israel from Sinai to the defeat of Sihon and Og on the East side of the Jordan. Psalm 106 gives a summary of the history of Israel from Egypt to Babylon in 48 verses. Stephen gives a similar overview in Acts 7. Those who will teach this material will have to carefully choose which section of verses to cover and which to leave uncovered. It will be hard to resist the temptation to slow down (so you don’t miss anything) and consider the details. Keep in mind that the purpose of this study is to get an overview of these prophets.
