Led by editor and teacher Joe Grimm, Michigan State University School of Journalism classes publish guides to greater cultural competence. This group of students and their instructor are known as the Bias Busters. Grimm has been working in cross-cultural communication for over 25 years, beginning as the ombudsman and newsroom recruiter at the Detroit Free Press. The students prepare a cultural competence guide as part of their Journalism instruction. The concept of this series is to teach cultural competence by spreading awareness about a certain cultural, ethnic or religious group or community. Ultimately, the goal is to break down cultural and socially constructed walls by opening up discussion among groups. The guides have been used in diversity training in business, healthcare, education and law enforcement. The Bias Busters approach cultural competence on the basis that questions asked out of sincere interest, even if phrased in a less than graceful manner, are the best way to bridge cultures. The guides are meant to start that process and lead to face-to-face conversations. The guides are icebreakers individuals can read on their own to make awkward conversations easier. Answers in these cultural competence guides are meant to be clear, honest and non-judgmental. "100 Questions and Answers About African Americans" is one of 17 cultural competence guide books. Other books have covered: Chaldean Americans, Hispanics and Latinos, Arab Americans, East Asian Cultures, Native Americans, Americans, American Jews, Muslim Americans, Immigrants, Indian Americans, Veterans, Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, Millennials and Gen X, The U.S. Mexico Border and Law Enforcement. The authors of this guide are Michigan State University students Michelle Armstead, Brian Batayeh, Kelsey Block, Victoria Bowles, Paige Boyd, Stacy Cornwell, Kiana Elkins, Lilliana Forti, Brittany S. Holmes, Rachel Linnemann, Stephanie Hernandez McGavin, Veronica Muñoz, Cayden Royce, Danielle Schwartz, Caitlin Taylor and Rashad Timmons.
