Synopsis

Never Turning Back is a biography of Sally Alice Thompson, a remarkable social activist who turned 100 on October 15,2023, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Dreaming of a peaceful planet where families can thrive free of the threat of nuclear war, she has worked ceaselessly at the intersection of corporate power, environmental justice and human rights to make the dream come true.

Born and raised in the Midwest during the Great Depression, Sally Alice endured poverty and abuse in childhood. Lost and directionless as a young woman, she grew to understand that focusing on her own trauma was not the way to move ahead. Instead, she found direction in looking for the good in others and working with them toward common goals. She walked 3,700 miles across the US in the Great Peace March of 1986 and continued a year later to walk for peace from Leningrad to Moscow. Inspired by people she met behind the Iron Curtain, she returned to her home in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and began a Sister Cities program with Ashgabat, Turkmenistan. She traveled there 29 times to bring cultural exchanges and friendship to the people of both places. Stories of her many other accomplishments are found in these pages.

This book is an homage to Sally Alice and to all those who have spent their lives working for peace and justice. The story of her activism begins after World War II and continues to 2023. Young people will understand from her example that they can live rich, fulfilling lives despite a traumatic beginning. Adults will marvel at her courage, curiosity and resilience as she ages and just keeps going. And everyone can learn about a dramatic period of history through the often-neglected lens of working for peace.
