WE LOST OUR FIFTH FORK ...and other moments when we need some perspective
There they stood. No Mom and Dad could have ever been prouder. Standing
side-by-side on the porch of their little student-made, one-room home, it appeared
as if they were gazing out, enjoying the nearby tennis match, but keeping a
watchful eye on their brood. All ten of them.
Ten little ducklings who have recently taken up residence in the lake
on our school campus.
But the danger of a hawk lurks nearby.
Several days later, Nancy and I drove by when she said, “Look at those little ducks
out there in the middle of that lake all by themselves! And the mom’s just sitting over
there on the shore. She better get out there! What does she think she’s doing?”
At our school, graduation looms in the not-too-distant future. And it’s the parents
of those seniors who come to mind. The moms and dads of those graduates who are
about to leave the safety of their own front porch. The guardians of those 18-year-old
ducks who are about to fly and swim and move out on their own.
And sometimes, get just a bit out of reach.
So we struggle with the how-to of what we do. Should we stand back?
How far? Should we watch? Do we dare? What do children learn if we’re always
there to save them from themselves? What sort of parents are we if we don’t? Should
we make them stay on the porch? On the shore? In the lake? In their bedroom?
Forever? And did I do it right?
With essays and commentary on people and events of everyday life as diverse
as ducks and dental appointments to the life of a school or the death of a friend,
“We Lost Our Fifth Fork” offers the distinctive viewpoint of a husband,
dad, grandfather and educator with each observation pondering the
perspective we often lack, can seldom find but always need.
