At the American Language Journal, we are excitedly preparing for 2019, declared by the United Nations as the Year of Indigenous Languages. Many Native American tribes are currently actively engaged in their own indigenous language maintenance and revitalization programs. There are many reasons why language revitalization and education are important as language impacts much more than our ability to communicate. How and why we learn a language is crucially important. As such, this winter issue of the American Language Journal focuses on language within the context of identity and psychology. We invite other language researchers to further investigate how language is connected to identity and how we can improve language education approaches by studying psychology.
