Call To Poetify: Poetry is everything. There is no one definition, no one way, no hard solid clear road. You trek your own path, and leave your own trail, hoping to show others the same steps you took, hoping they understand, hoping they feel your journey. When you do it right, then it’s poetry. Some refuse to follow. Some should NOT follow, because it is the wrong way for them. Some are wandering lost, not even realizing there is another way until they see your swath, your walk, your poetry through the grass and the weeds, through the prairie thicket.

One seldom chooses to be a poet. It’s not because it’s not lucritive, because Heaven knows it pays so well. It’s more because a poet isn’t chosen as much as called. A poet just happens. Sure, the craft can be honed and improved. The visuals and the vocabulary can be used in ever deeper and more meaningful ways with experience, b ut the heart of a poet is born in him. When I first started writing many years ago, I wrote short stories, primarily, with an occasional poem. I started my own magazine (pre internet days) to help me develop my craft and to keep real life from intruding and retarding my writing. I was not a poetry fan. I felt cheated. People talked about poetry, but it just seemed like something people used to make them look smart or artsy. I wanted to like poetry, but never found anything that really spoke to me. I was resigned to that realization that poetry was just a scam put out by pretentious academic types. Then, I saw an interview with W.S. Merwin, and I realized that I had just not been exposed to enough of the right kind of poetry. It changed the way I saw the world, and the way I wrote about it. It wasn’t because Merwin was such a terrific poet (although he is), it was because now I knew that poetry really could be good. It was like finding out that kale could b e delicious. For a while after that, you want to put kale in everything you eat. As a comic book writer, I still get an incredible thrill when I see what an artist has done to bring my story to life. It brought a physical rush when I saw those first pages. It’s also very scary. I’m setting out my vision of a world, only to have it filtered through someone else’s eyes, a different artist with his or her own quirks and visions. Sometimes I get back something that fits my vision exactly. Sometimes it actually enhances what I was seeing. Other times, however, it doesn’t fit at all with what I had in my head. Depending on the project and the artist, I may not have m uch say in what gets changed, if anything. That can be nerve straining. There are three vastly different types of writing that I do. Each uses a different set of creative muscles. There’s the prose style for novels and essays and short stories. Then, there’s poetry and all its myriad forms. Then, script writing comes at a story from still a different angle. They all inform one another, though. They all strengthen what I do.
