Synopsis

Here is poetry we can almost touch with our fingertips. In Shoshauna Shy’s capable hands, language forms a complex patchwork of pleasing texture and hue—at times luscious as velvet, durable as denim, or crisp as cotton prints. Each poem is exact in its clarity and ecstatic in imaginative stretch and give, held together by craft so fine its seams are invisible.

- Angela Rydell, Poet, Author

The Splash of Easy Laughter reads as a memoir in verse that fittingly begins pre-womb when an unconventional girl-to-be chooses her parents. This delightfully original poem serves as precursor for the following trip through a woman’s fully-lived life. Stopovers are adventures that throb with the innocence of childhood, the confusion, heartbreak and sensuality of adolescence that grow into adult sexuality, marriage, children and all the suspense, surprises, trials and yes, laughter that make a journey memorable. Economy of words, expertly extended metaphors and imagery as fresh as roadside flowers extract extra mileage in each exquisitely crafted poem. Buy this book, and take a ride you can repeat whenever wanderlust for good literature drives you.

- Ellaraine Lockie, award-winning poet, nonfiction author, contest judge, educator

In these perfectly chiseled poems capturing moments of great dramatic tension and complexity, Shoshauna Shy presents a kaleidoscopic view of a life lived from infancy and adolescence through the trials and travails of married life. It is like a 600 page autobiography distilled into a small vial of essential oil. Shy is a master of condensation, packing lightning-quick flashes of insight and layers of meaning into spaces "small enough to squeeze between a consonant and a comma.”

In poems like "The College of Mothers" or "After a Near-Miss with a 40-Ton Semi," Shy paints immensely powerful scenes with just a few masterful brush strokes. This is 100-proof poetry, potent enough to burn, so complex you'll want to savor it.

- Tim Walsh, author of When the World was Rear-Wheel Drive
