Who is Fiona? "I'm just me," answers the main character, who became the official school cat for a community of students. As the book progresses, photographs show us Fiona's constant, calming presence as the reader learns that she is faithful, fearless, and fastidious, among other descriptors that enliven the story's predictable text and repeated lines. As photos reveal Fiona's personality and students share their reflections, we see how Fiona became a participant in daily learning.

Ruthi Davenport loves to spend time with her horses, and to be in the mountains near her home in northeast Oregon. She has been an elementary teacher, a professor in teacher education, and a researcher in reading assessment. She is founder of a Montessori-based preschool called Oak Haven, and she is a co-founder of Clover Haven, an equine center. She has taught young children guitar, piano, and sewing, and helped learners of all ages with reading, writing, and math. She and Fiona are currently writing books for young children.
Fiona Mae the Brave was adopted from the local animal shelter, and raised by the children at Oak Haven. Each child always let her smell his or her hand before petting her, and they were keenly aware of her messages from a tail twitch or a growl. They respected her personal space and she always knew she was safe. She greeted them on the front steps each day, she was actively involved in all our learning pursuits, and she had a close relationship with many of the children.
