Synopsis

In this lyrical and sensuous volume of poems, Lucile Burt draws a wandering line from the images and ethos of nature to our human pangs and passions, with an acute awareness of her own vanishing days. We should read this lovely book aloud, and again.

Alan Lightman, author of Einstein’s Dreams and Song of Two Worlds

In language that ranges from intimate and plainspoken to incantatory, Lucile Burt’s wise and deftly wrought poems draw the reader into a world where “any extraordinary / ordinary thing, /heartbeat and breath.” is transformed into lines that elegize and celebrate the natural world, the quotidian, the resiliency and failing of the human body and the comfort and persistence of memory. Life’s “cone of uncertainty,” the poet insists, also begins a “cone of hope.”

Lorna Knowles Blake, author of Permanent Address

Lucile Burt’s The Cone of Uncertainty offers her readers the legacy of a life lived with intelligence, subtlety, and care. Every word of this book shares a precious sense of responsibility and connection to the earth, the human journey, and the traditions of poetry. Brava, Lucile Burt!

Annie Finch, poet, writer, and speaker
