We emerged late in Earth’s planetary life, emanations from primate mammals. From our homeland in the savannahs of East Africa we walked to inhabit Eurasia and later the Americas, and with boats, Australia and the islands of three oceans. We became Earth’s fiercest hunters, its chemists, its astronomers, invented agriculture and civilization, charted its every mountain, lake, river, reef, and fishery, until an entire planet was domesticated. Now we struggle to keep our life-support in balance towards unprecedented world-around affluence for all, and its jewel, liberal democracy. Our greatest breakthrough to date has been massive reorganization of our human nature itself, the dawning of a modern consciousness, and earth’s self-celebration.
This is a story of humans ever becoming human, meeting challenges pushing us ever closer to meeting ourselves, our middle identity, between sky and earth, sun and moon, immediate family and global society.
