About the author: George MacDonald (1824–1905) was a Scottish author and minister. His work as an author did not receive wide-spread acclaim until after his death although famous American writers contemporary to him recognized his talent. He was a major inspiration for many of the twentieth century’s significant writers, including J. R. R. Tolkien, G. K. Chesterton, Oswald Chambers, and C. S. Lewis among others. MacDonald was educated at Aberdeen and Highbury College. Although he only ministered for one church for about three years, he spent the remainder of his life lecturing, preaching, and writing.
