For approximately 15 years during the mid-1700s, Elizabeth Raffald was a housekeeper for several families, including the Warbutons of Arley Hall. It was there at Arley Hall that she met her husband, John, who at the time was the head gardener. They eventually moved to Manchester, where she opened a culinary school and catering business. Being a progressive businesswoman, she also founded the first domestic service agency in Manchester. She frequently contributed articles to the local newspapers, produced multiple city-wide trade directories, and authored a book on midwifery as well as her most famous work, The Experienced English Housekeeper. Her cookbook was wildly popular, going through 13 authorized reprints, and an estimated 23 pirated versions.
