I've been blessed to be married to my high school sweetheart, Linda, for over 42 years. We got engaged less than three months after she turned 16 (I was only 17). We got married at 17 and 18. Our marriage survived the birth of our first child during college, the birth of our second child during law school, the birth of our third child while I was working crazy hours as a young lawyer, raising three children while starting my own law firm, and the deaths of two grandsons. Today, our favorite activity is anything we can do together. We enjoy each other that much. The marriage deck was stacked against us. So, why did our marriage survive and thrive? If you think it's all been sunshine and roses; not quite. Our first apartment was $78 a month. We were struggling students raising small children for the first six years of our marriage. At 17 and 18, we were children ourselves. And at times, I was a jerk. Fortunately for us, Linda grew up faster than I did, and she was patient until I caught up. During our marriage, we became very active in our church, and I had the opportunity to serve in positions that required me to spend many years working with adults and couples on marriage and relationship issues. I read and studied and tried to sort out what made sense and what really worked.
