Born and raised in a small town in East Texas, she married Chief Petty Officer B.D. Marshall in 1954. Together, they raised two daughters and now have five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. After her children were grown, she pursued higher education, earning a Bachelor of Applied Arts and Sciences, a Master's degree in Early Childhood and Development, and a PhD in Philosophy. She is also a licensed Social Worker.
