Coffee is everywhere and nowhere in this poetry collection: a lens, a ritual, a quiet companion to grief, desire, prayer, and wonder. In two movements, “Nearly Home Brew” and “Travel Mug,” the poems move from the domestic to the global, pausing at kitchen tables, laundromats, rooftops in Marrakesh, cafés in Melbourne and Paris, and a twilight porch outside Bangkok.
The collection’s formal range is as wide as its geography. Sonnets, gacelas, espinelas, and cinquains sit alongside free verse and prose-adjacent lyrics, each form chosen to hold a particular mood: the slow grief of a daughter drinking black coffee by the bay, two weary angels ordering dark roast and wishing they could lie, a goatherd in an ancient landscape who stumbles toward the first cup ever brewed.
Coffee here is less a subject than a temperature: the warmth at which ordinary life becomes luminous, strange, worth examining. Tender, witty, and quietly metaphysical, Ground This Morning is a collection for anyone who has ever held a hot cup and felt, briefly, that everything might be all right.
“In rhythms and diction as relaxed and quiet as your Sunday-morning cup of joe, Mark J. Mitchell’s Ground This Morning is a paean to coffee’s rituals for our ordinary and our extraordinary days, in middle America and all over the globe.”
— Maryann Corbett, author of The O in the Air, , In Code, Street View, and Mid Evil
"The greatest strength of the collection is the variety of forms Mitchell employs. From the better-known cinquain and villanelle forms, to the rarer forms such as espinella, gacela, and casida, the poems’ forms coincide with the project of the book, to offer a tapestry of the significance of coffee (and relationships) in multiple cultures."
— Tracy Youngblom, author of Boy: Poems, One Bird a Day, Growing Big, and Driving to Heaven
