À propos des auteurs

Hilda Doolittle (1886-1961), better known by her pen name H.D., was an American poet, novelist, and memoirist whose innovative work helped shape literary Modernism. She is best remembered as one of the leading figures of the Imagist movement, which sought to replace ornate poetic language with clarity, precision, and vivid imagery.Born in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, H.D. developed an early interest in literature and the classical world. As a young woman, she became acquainted with poets Ezra Pound and William Carlos Williams, both of whom would become major figures in twentieth-century American poetry. After moving to Europe in 1911, H.D. became part of the emerging Modernist literary community.Ezra Pound recognized the distinctive qualities of her poetry and introduced her work to the literary world under the name "H.D. Imagiste." Her first poetry collection, Sea Garden, appeared in 1916 and established her reputation for spare, intensely visual verse. Drawing frequently upon nature, the sea, ancient Greece, mythology, love, and female experience, H.D. developed a poetic voice that was both distinctly Modernist and deeply rooted in the classical tradition.Although initially associated with Imagism, H.D.'s career extended far beyond the movement. She wrote poetry, novels, memoirs, translations, and experimental prose throughout her life. Her experiences during two world wars, her engagement with psychoanalysis, including analysis with Sigmund Freud, and her exploration of gender, identity, spirituality, and mythology influenced her later writing.H.D. died in Zurich, Switzerland, in 1961. Once discussed primarily in relation to other Modernist writers, she has since been recognized as a major literary figure in her own right and an important influence on generations of poets and writers.
