Synopsis

It is April 1729. The colony of Pennsylvania is in an uproar. Its paper money is in the process of being retired, and there are not enough silver coins in the colony to support trade. Farmers and small businessmen are forced to barter, and employees are paid in the merchandise of their employers. Yet wealthy lenders oppose a new issue of paper money, for fear that it will reduce interest rates or even cause inflation.

Into the fray steps a young Benjamin Franklin, 23 years old and a fledgling printer. He publishes a six-thousand-word pamphlet titled "A Modest Enquiry into the Nature and Necessity of a Paper-Currency," arguing powerfully that issuing more paper money will generate economic prosperity and trade. His views carry the day, and the Pennsylvania Assembly votes to approve the issue.

Though he had some small fame as a writer, "Necessity of a Paper-Currency" is Franklin's first significant foray into politics. It gained him powerful friends in the legislature, and was the first step in Franklin's celebrated political career—which would culminate with him becoming one of America's most beloved Founders.

This edition features detailed annotations by Dr. Oren Litwin that clarify obscure terms, explain the political debate, and expand on the economic arguments that Franklin marshaled in support of his position.
