Synopsis

Amherst College: I install the first computers in 1963. A prominent professor of mathematics says, “Computers are for trade schools.” Students are so fascinated by the computer they have to be asked to leave computer center at midnight. President John F. Kennedy dedicates the new Robert Frost Library on the campus where Frost was a teacher.

Wesleyan University: A hot-bed of troubles with the Vietnam War protests and black student rebellions. My first day of work, guns are fired in the president’s office below my office, and my secretary and I leave via the fire escape. My office is fire bombed twice, but my staff and I keep on pushing through with our efforts to install Wesleyan’s first computer.

Williston Northampton School: The Head of School is asked to retire, and also the Business Manager retires. Almost all buildings are in serious disrepair, with roofs leaking water and heating systems barely functioning. Bank notes of more than one million dollars are staring me in the face. Not enough money to meet payroll. Sex discrimination law suits challenge me. An empty campus, still unsold after many months, draining precious cash.
