Three thousand years. Four traditions. One finding, and one argument that never resolved.
In 1656, the Jewish community of Amsterdam expelled a twenty-three-year-old member with the harshest curse it ever issued. Baruch Spinoza never contested it, never apologized, and never joined another community. He supported himself grinding optical lenses and worked out, alone and from first principles, that God is not a person, the soul does not survive, and no individual is separate from the universe that individual observes.
He was not the first to reach that conclusion. Teachers in an Indian forest arrived at it three thousand years earlier by subtraction. A Chinese text arrived at it by watching water. A Greek philosopher followed an argument until it denied that motion occurs. A Persian poet arrived through music and movement. None had access to the others.
The traditions converge on the finding that the separate self does not survive examination, and they disagree completely about what remains. One holds that nothing remains at all.
This book follows both the convergence and the disagreement into contemporary neuroscience, psychedelic research, and the historical record of teachers who reached the insight and abused it. Written for readers with no background in philosophy.
