BEAT BIPOLAR is a motivating self-help memoir for individuals who have had little success in preventing their bipolar mania and depression through traditional treatment plans that include medication. It is written in support of skeptics who contend that their strain of bipolar is not a chemical imbalance, but rather one of an episodical nature involving theories of predisposition, triggers of stress, and relationships of cause-and-effect.
In 2015, author Bill Lawyer finally beat bipolar after 35-years of suffering through over 30 episodes of mood swings. His solution to beating the symptoms of the illness centers around the discovery that stress was the overall cause of his symptoms, as defined by the Diathesis Stress Model of bipolar. This model asserts that, if a combination of predisposition (genetic vulnerability) and stress exceeds a threshold, the effects can trigger the manic phase of bipolar. Afflicted with predisposition of the illness, each one of Bill’s manic episodes was triggered by extreme levels of stress generated from his poor judgement and habits.
In turn, in Bill's case, the devastation from his mania caused his depression that occurred after each manic episode. Bill contends that the correlation between his mania and depression represents a cause-and-effect relationship where, when the mania is permanently eliminated, the depression naturally ceases to exist.
Bill’s key to preventing his mania is through the elimination of stressful behaviors and habits. He provides various examples of eliminating stress through the implementation of permanent wholesale lifestyle change, discipline, patience, perseverance, and the pursuit of lifetime passions. He specifically addresses alcohol and drug abuse, frivolous relationships, and health neglect as the main contributors to his high stress. And he dedicates entire chapters to each of these topics with solutions to overcoming them. Addiction is addressed throughout the book, and Bill shows that many of his solutions to combat bipolar are also applicable to overcoming instances of addiction.
Other chapters in the book offer solutions to the many negative implications that bipolar can cause. For instance, Bill provides solutions to mitigating the problems associated with his 36 career resignations, 38 police-related incidents, financial hardships, and various other personal failures. He also provides solutions to managing the debilitating implications of bipolar specifically related to self-harm.
Bill acknowledges that medication is an effective treatment option for many bipolar patients, but not all. He is telling his story to help inspire and give hope to those bipolar patients who have also had no success using medication to prevent their bipolar symptoms. Bill is approaching his 11th consecutive year of stability after adopting the methods he provides in BEAT BIPOLAR.
