The Way into the Flowering Heart is a visionary meditation on Pennsylvania German spirituality, folk art, ancestry, and the inward life of Christian imagination. Beginning with the image of the lily—flower, heart, emblem, inheritance—the book follows the spiritual logic of fraktur, decorated linens, chests, gardens, hymns, and household objects as signs of an interior paradise made visible in daily life.
At its center is the “flowering heart”: not nostalgia, not ornament merely, but a lived inwardness, an inwendigkeit, in which nature, craft, scripture, and memory become one garment. Drawing on Jacob Boehme, Johann Arndt, Christopher Dock, Ephrata, the Schwenkfelders, Mennonite and Anabaptist traditions, Wallace Stevens, Thomas Merton, Blake, Hopkins, and the Song of Songs, the book argues that Pennsylvania German folk art carried a profound theology of creation: the world of natural and humanly made beauty is not evil, but sacramental, redeemed, and alive.
Part family remembrance, part theological essay, part cultural recovery, The Way into the Flowering Heart sets the Pennsylvania Dutch imagination against the darker Puritan inheritance of wilderness, guilt, domination, and exploitation. In its place it discovers a hidden American transcendentalism rooted not in abstraction, but in linen, wood, ink, garden, hymn, and handwork.
