The world watched on August 15, 2021, as desperate survivors crowded onto an American military airplane to escape the horrors of Afghanistan. Siam Pasarly was there, along with his wife's family, during those final days. His love for Afghanistan was undeniable, but his forward-thinking views marked him for death by the hands of the new regime. Forced to flee, he, along with many other people, eventually landed at Fort McCoy in Wisconsin. From there, Pasarly moved to Chicago, where he started his own business, helping other unfortunate individuals find their footing in America. However, what he left behind is heartbreaking and never seems to get easier.
More than two years ago, he parted ways with his pregnant wife and young daughter, returning to their home in Kabul to get some money from their bank account. What was supposed to be an overnight trip turned into a nightmare. Across oceans and in defiance of governmental regulations, both domestic and international, he holds out hope that someday he will reunite with his family.
This is the story of Pasarly’s last few days in Kabul. While lying his way through checkpoints and hiding out from gunmen, he found his way to the airport to get on one of the last flights out of the country. He vows to return to Afghanistan someday. No matter how long or how difficult it may be, Pasarly hasn’t given up on the country of his birth.
