Synopsis

Princess Hazel has a gift for growing things, and lately they will not stop growing.

Hazel would much rather be in the castle greenhouse in her green garden jacket, testing soil with red cabbage juice, than practicing the piano for a royal banquet. Tomorrow, though, is the Grand Botanical Showcase, and judges are coming to see the gardens of Whispering Meadows.

When Hazel gets nervous, she hiccups, and every hiccup makes the plants around her grow wild. A star jasmine vine pulls itself out of its pot and scuttles off on twisted roots. Giant roses lace across the greenhouse door. Then bamboo bursts up through the castle courtyard, cracking the cobblestones as it climbs.

With help from Fiona, the serious young apprentice at the royal apothecary, Hazel races to set the gardens right before the Showcase is ruined. Her steady grey Icelandic mare, Rune, has a gait so smooth that she could carry a full glass of water without spilling a drop, and she may hold the calm that Hazel needs.

A warm, funny story about calming nerves and the horse who keeps a steady beat.
