Synopsis

This curricular unit in the Contexts for Learning Mathematics series is used throughout the year. In K-1, math workshop is often a games and routines workshop, with children playing games or doing quick images and minilesson routines with the teacher. Play the games often, practice the routines, and bring in board games and dice games, as well. Research shows that board games can increase achievement as they are a precursor to the number line model. The open number line as a tool for thinking is introduced in grade one to represent addition and subtraction to 100.
