The First Thanksgiving:
This story was inspired by my neighbor, who told us how she first immigrated to America years ago, alone with her son, and adapted to new traditions. Celebrating Thanksgiving marked her initiation into American culture, and she was grateful to have been invited to a Thanksgiving party by her real estate agent. It got me thinking about all the similar parents who are in her situation, sacrificing everything for their child’s future and moving to a new country, who didn’t have as wholesome of a first Thanksgiving.

The Name of Two Million Faces:
When I first started getting into photography, I looked up 50-orso Pulitzer Prize Winning Photos and read the stories behind each one. The story behind “The Terror of War” moved me the most, especially considering how the photographer, Nick Ut, played a big role in her rescue. I had also recently spent 2 months writing a historical paper on the Vietnam War, so it hit close to home. I wrote this story in tribute to “The Terror of War.” I have no doubt in any other scenario, with any other photographer, or any other child, a rescue mission, successful or not, would still play out. In war, the individual is insignificant, but these stories will forever be humanity’s most sacred memories.

The Reunion:
It was inspired by a random comment I read on Instagram about an imaginary Second Civil War in the US. I thought it would be a fun topic to write about, so I combined it with another idea I had, about a Death Notification officer. I originally tried to write it as a short story, but it never felt quite right, so as soon as I picked up playwriting—this was my first play!—the story ended up flowing seamlessly.
