In World Enough and Time, Fred Carlisle looks back across ninety years to explore the relationships, landscapes, losses, and ideas that formed his life. Through a deeply personal collection of essays, he remembers the father he lost as a teenager, the mother and mentors who influenced him, the wife who brought unexpected joy, and the communities that taught him what it means to belong.
From his Ohio hometown and the shores of Lake Michigan to a rural Virginia mountain valley, Carlisle considers how place anchors memory—and how leaving, returning, and growing older can transform our understanding of home.
Drawing on decades as a professor and university leader, he also reflects on the changing world of higher education, the power of reading and writing, religious belief and doubt, regret, mortality, and the difficult art of making peace with the past.
Thoughtful, candid, and deeply humane, World Enough and Time invites readers to consider their own lives: the people who changed them, the places they still carry, and what ultimately gives a life meaning.

Fred Carlisle grew up in Delaware, Ohio, the hometown he writes about in World Enough and Time. After military service and graduate school, he enjoyed a long academic career as an English professor, mainly at Michigan State University, and later as a provost at Miami University in Ohio and then Virginia Tech. He has written studies of Walt Whitman and Loren Eiseley and four memoirs-among them, Hollow and Home: A Story of Self and Place and The Lake Effect: A Lake Michigan Mosaic. He lives with his wife and favorite editor, Beth Obenshain, on her family farm in the Virginia mountains.

Paperback. Etat : new. Paperback. World Enough and Time explores the way primary people and places influence our lives. The author also reflects on writing, aging, belief, doubts, regrets, and satisfactions. In a series of personal essays, World Enough and Time explores the way primary people and places influence our lives. It also reflects on writing, aging, belief, one's doubts, regrets, and satisfactions. Of the hundreds of people we encounter in a lifetime, only a few influence us profoundly. Carlisle writes about his parents, professors, a university president, and his wife-individuals "who have made me who I am." Carlisle also reflects on the way primary places in his life have shaped him-his hometown, Lake Michigan, and the mountain valley where he lived for ten years. His hometown and stable family provided a solid base but also forced him to contend with the town's class and race prejudice. Lake Michigan has always inspired him with its beauty and sobered him with its violence. Clover Hollow helped him understand the value of a past he had rejected for decades. The essay "A Time Migrant's Journey through Higher Education" traces the dramatic and disorienting change in universities since the 1960s as professor and provost Carlisle experienced it-from academia's post-World War II promise and growth, through the disruptions of the late '60s and '70s, into the culture wars and the subsequent loss of funding and prestige. Several essays reflect very personally on aging, dying, religious faith and doubt, the author's regrets, but also on his satisfactions. The book invites readers to think about the places and people in their own lives, as well as about aging, belief, regrets, and satisfaction. This item is printed on demand.
