Synopsis

Sentimental Education is a new collection by Valery Chereshnya, an Odessa-born poet and essayist. The title nods to Flaubert, but this is not a novel of youthful education. It is about a lifelong training of the eye and ear: learning to see the "simple genius of the text" in streets, faces and everyday things.

The poems move from an Odessa childhood by the sea to the courtyards and embankments of Petersburg, and on to Rome, Venice and New York. They take in the memory of a father and mother, old age, illness, the fear of death and a reconciliation with it. Throughout, the poet talks with Gogol and Sterne, Tyutchev, Kafka and Proust, Horace and Hamlet, and offers his own versions of the Psalms. At the center is time, and the word that survives when time collapses.

Chereshnya's verse is quiet, attentive and exact. It joins classical craft with a free, conversational voice, and bitterness with gratitude for life. In Russian.
