Follow along as Yussef takes us on a journey through the trees,
Past all the branches, and below fallen leaves.
Deep down in the earth, but also in the sky,
He shows us who makes life possible… and why!
In this beautifully illustrated children’s book, we learn about the various bugs that make life possible on earth. Using an apple as a tangible example, Yussef Rafik invites the reader to follow along as he traces the apple's life cycle from pollinators to detritivores, and everything in between. By breaking the process down into each specific step, young readers (and their family members) can see just how important it is to protect the bugs we share space with—and provide a home for them, if we can.

Yussef Rafik is a British zoologist, wildlife TV presenter, and children's author. Born in Peterborough, UK, Yussef studied Zoology at the University of Reading and worked as a zookeeper before moving into TV presenting. He is most known for his work on BBC Earth, hosting shows such as Bugface, After We've Gone, and 24 Hours With, but has also presented for the likes of Sky Nature, BBC Bitesize, CBBC, and Aardman Animations. His children's books, Don't Squish A Slug and How To Be An Eco Explorer, focus on some of the planet's less-loved but equally important creatures and aim to inspire more people to cherish our natural world. Who Makes The World Work? Further showcases Yussef's passion for invertebrates and invites young audiences to explore the world beneath their feet in a new way.
Kelly Ulrich is an artist from the west coast of Canada, who likes painting so much she created a rain forest in her kitchen! When she's not busy dreaming up new children's stories, she can be found sipping a cup of tea in her backyard while watching nature, or working on her successful comic strip series on Instagram: "Nala, Dean & Vinny."
