Synopsis

In September 1990, Victoria Donnelly travels from Texas to Regensburg with her mother, Anneliese, expecting little more than the sale of a neglected family property. For Victoria, the apartment building on Lonerstrasse is a place she has heard about but never seen. For Anneliese, it is the childhood home she fled—and has spent more than forty years refusing to remember.

The building contains three apartments, a garden, a cramped Mansarde beneath the roof, and a wooden staircase that creaks beneath every passing foot. It also contains the remains of another family’s life.

Before the war, the house belonged to Samuel and Rachel Rosenfeld, who lived on the ground floor with their daughters, Miriam, Leah, and Sophie. Anneliese’s father, Bruno Felsing, was a young teacher renting the apartment above them. As antisemitic laws tightened around the Rosenfelds, Bruno rose through the Nazi ranks and acquired their property for a single Reichsmark. The family continued living in their own rooms—but now as tenants of the man who had stolen their home.

Half a century later, Victoria begins uncovering what the staircase has preserved: a photograph, a red belt, a black ledger, and the manuscript of a young writer who recorded what happened inside the building while others looked away.

As Anneliese confronts her mother’s silence and her father’s crimes, Victoria grows close to Elias Rahman, a Palestinian architect interested in buying the house. Together they must decide whether a stolen home can ever be inherited innocently—and whether exposing the truth can become the first act of restitution.

Moving between 1930s Germany and the autumn of 1990, The Staircase is a haunting yet deeply human novel about love, complicity, memory, and the moral obligations passed from one generation to the next.

Some houses shelter their inhabitants. Others remember them.
