The Protectors of Humanity is Book One of the Nicholas Chronicles — the origin story of the man who would become the first Claus, set within the world of The Aurora Borealis Chronicles.

Nicholas has spent years quietly protecting the families on his land — moving children through the dark before the soldiers arrive, building a network of ordinary people willing to risk everything for strangers. Beside him every step is Gráinne, his true north, the woman who carries what he cannot afford to feel so he can keep holding the direction.
But the operation has grown too large to hide. When the Crown moves to close the net, Nicholas faces the choice he has been avoiding since the first child was carried to safety: stay and fight a battle he cannot win, or leave the only home he has ever known and lead the people who trust him into the dark.
He chooses the dark.
What begins as an escape across the North Atlantic becomes something none of them expected. Thirty-two people who trusted him enough to follow. A sea that tests every one of them. And then — on the open water, near an island without a name — a hundred elves fleeing their own tyrant, led by an elder who navigates by starlight and speaks of a place the lights call home.
