On the surface, disease prevention is a knotty problem. The health care industry tries to demonstrate savings in health care by an untold number of programs relating to education and disease prevention. And rather than seeing savings in health care from these efforts, costs of the most easily preventable diseases have escalated, some by exponential amounts. What is the problem with disease prevention? What could possibly be wrong with efforts, noble or otherwise, that are designed to prevent disease? As it turns out, quite a lot. This book addresses those problems not from a theoretical perspective but from a practical one, problems that affect you the reader rather than the folks in the ivory towers of academia that discuss, research, and publish or folks in governmental agencies who do whatever they do in attempts to define terminology, influence the discussion, and direct practices. Part of this book will address the expansive and convoluted language of prevention and the messenger(s) of prevention - - who are they and are they rightly positioned to effect change? We will attempt to answer the question: Does prevention same lives? And at what cost? Finally, and with some hesitancy, this book will attempt to make prevention personal by offering suggestions as to how and which preventive health strategies may or should be incorporated into your life.
