Forensic anthropologists are frequently presented with challenging casework. This book describes five such cases—a victim of a particularly brutal beating, a man who lost his shoe, fragments from a burned body, a cold case from 1972, and a visitor from the past. Each case presented challenges that required meticulous fieldwork, tireless research, and innovative technology. They all demonstrate the need for forensic anthropologists to be rigorous yet inventive in their application of methods and interpretation of results. The stories of these cases are told from the point of view of one forensic anthropologist and her team, whose hard work helped to identify the victims and/or how they met their end. In each story, methods of analysis are explained as are the results and their interpretations. They each present a story of someone lost who was found. Their stories are told here in a succinct yet informative style that is as entertaining as it is poignant.
